In 2002, David Bowie sat down with former Much VJ, George Stroumboulopoulos to discuss his music and consistently changing ideas of what it meant to be an artist.

When discussing his fans and their support for his work, Bowie describes what could be considered his take on the personal relationship he shared with them at a distance, “I think people are ok with me making mistakes…one can be tempted to glide along, which is not a good thing…I’ve consistently sold the same amount of albums for decades now. It’s like they’ve really been there for me. At night I can hear them going, ‘when’s he going to get over this period,’ but it’s ok. They’ll wait for me to figure out what it is I’m doing.”

Bowie created music and personas without fear of being judged, and inspired others to do the same. The influence he projected on the people he interacted with didn’t go unnoticed. Stroumboulopoulos himself took to Instagram on Tuesday to share how he was inspired by the artist writing, “I was lucky enough to spend a few moments with David Bowie back in the MuchMusic days. He was gracious, generous, funny and kind. I was new at this and learned the most simple, powerful lesson from him. It’s just about choices. If you feel it. Do it, fearlessly. Ignore everyone who tells you, you can’t. Now, go out and create something. We’ll all be better off if you do.”
