His twentieth album – and first to be recorded completely digitally – saw Bowie embracing drum and bass – reflecting the trends of the time – and producing himself. Once again entering the studio with no prepared material (this time a mere five days after his Outside tour ended), DB chose not to sample other people’s music, instead recording original parts and speeding them up. While not a huge seller, it was largely well-received by the critics.
