This album, Bowie’s 21st and his last on EMI, also has the honour of being the first by a recognised artist to be available in its entirety to download over the internet (in this case, a fortnight prior to its physical release). A great deal of the music featured on hours originates from a video game – Omikron: The Nomad Soul, though with different versions. Produced by Bowie and Reeves Gabrels, Hours is on the whole a gentle and slightly retrospective record, which builds throughout to harder pieces. It was not greeted with much love from the critics and was not commercially successful on any grand scale either.
