The exhibition David Bowie is will take place at Museu del Disseny de Barcelona (Barcelona Design Museum) starting May 25, 2017. The show, produced by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, has already been seen by a 1.5 million visitors during its world tour to cities including Berlin, Paris and Chicago. One of the most successful exhibitions in the long-standing history of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) finally comes to Barcelona
The Museu del Disseny de Barcelona will be the only venue in Spain to host “David Bowie Is”. The British artist’s multidisciplinary talent and ceaseless quest for innovation are echoed in the Museum’s commitment to exploring and demonstrating the connections between art and design, particularly in the field of graphic design and fashion. For this reason, it seems natural that the Museu del Disseny should be the host of this unique retrospective devoted Bowie’s life and work and which includes an extensive collection of outstanding creative and innovative objects.
“David Bowie Is” creates a comprehensive audiovisual exhibition experience using the most advanced multimedia technology. The V&A was given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archives to curate the first international retrospective on one of the most pioneering and influential performers of our times’ career.
“David Bowie Is” explores the creative processes of David Bowie as a musical innovator and cultural icon, tracing his shifting style and sustained reinvention across five decades. The exhibition also focuses on his collaborative work with artists and designers, and demonstrates how his work has both influenced and been influenced by wider movements in art, design, music, and theatre.
The V&A’s Theatre and Performance curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh selected more than 300 objects that were brought together for the very first time. They include handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs, Bowie’s own instruments and album artwork.
The best-selling exhibition has been on a worldwide tour since its inception at the V&A in 2013 and has travelled to nine venues in countries including Canada, Australia, Brazil and Japan.
