A large group of behind-the-scenes photographs of David Bowie and cast taken during the filming of The Man Who Fell to Earth are up for auction on May 18th. The group includes approximately 200 vintage color snapshots, 31 strips of color film negatives, and an 8 by 10 inch color print. These photographs were mostly taken by executive producer Si Litvinoff during the production of The Man Who Fell to Earth in New Mexico. In addition to Bowie, in his first major role, Litvinoff’s photos feature the film’s cast and crew, including director Nicolas Roeg, star Candy Clark, cinematographer Tony Richmond, and many others as well as on-set visitors like Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, critic Rex Reed, and photographer Brian Duffy. These are Litvinoff’s personal prints from the 1970s, and many feature their original Kodak lab stamps to their versos. Approximately 31 of these photographs appear as extras on The Criterion Collection’s DVD release of The Man Who Fell to Earth; the rest appear to be unpublished.
