Here’s a long overdue, higher quality restored version of this classic 1972 TV performance.
Five Years is originally a song from David Bowie’s album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”, recorded in late ’71, and released in June ‘72.
Performed here just three months after the release of the Hunky Dory album, this live-vocal version of Five Years was recorded at the BBC Television Centre, in London on the 7th of February 1972. Other than Bowie’s live vocal, the band are miming to the Bowie / Ken Scott produced backing track from the Ziggy album, minus the strings and other touches.
Ziggy and the Spiders were a completely new entity at this point, having only performed their first gig a week before at the Aylesbury Friars. Five Years was not played at the Aylesbury show, so The Old Grey Whistle Test was the first time it had ever been performed.

There are no high quality versions of this historic performance on line. Even the ‘official’ version that was on davidbowie dot com, has been removed. And so I thought it was high time that we had a decent version to enjoy. During the restoration process, I discovered that all previous versions were running at about 5% flat. This version also corrects that issue.
Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!
