Omnibus Press will publish the long awaited fourth instalment in the Bowie Odyssey series, ‘Bowie Odyssey 73′ by Simon Goddardin paperback and strictly limited edition hardback on May 25th.

Where the previous book on 1972 saw Bowie finally achieve his dreams of pop stardom by becoming Ziggy Stardust, in Bowie Odyssey 73 he begins to count the nightmarish cost. As Ziggy morphs into Aladdin Sane, David becomes the biggest-selling album artist in Britain, packing out concert halls worldwide from Tokyo to Romford. A hell of a moment to shock his millions of fans – not to mention his oblivious band – by suddenly announcing his ‘retirement’. Except that by doing so his fame only increases, as do his problems: more extramarital affairs than he can count on one hand, the beginnings of a chronic cocaine addiction and the return of a certain gnome from his past that he’d been desperately praying the cosmos had forgotten. It all adds up to the most dramatic and blackly comic book in Goddard’s novelistic series so far – a gripping, unsentimental portrait of inspiration, insanity and the thin line that divides.

Above, Bowie greeted by crowds of fans at Charing Cross Station, London. 5th May 1973.

Among the highlights of Bowie Odyssey 73 are Bowie’s life changing travels in Japan and Russia, a riotous chapter devoted to Bowie’s triumphant tour of Scotland and his major domestic upheaval from suburban Kent to seedy Maida Vale and swinging Chelsea. And, as with its three predecessors, Bowie’s story is interwoven with key dramatic events of the year including IRA bombings, Big Biba, the wedding of Princess Anne and the death of glam rock as the ecstasy of Marc Bolan succumbs to the agony of Alvin Stardust.

The ambitious Bowie Odyssey series is an intended ten book year-by-year chronicle of the life of the greatest pop star of his era against the cultural and social history of the 1970s – grounded in fact, written like fiction.
