Welbeck Publishing Group today announces that it will publish Bowie at the BBC, a collection of dozens of David Bowie’s interviews on BBC television and radio, spanning four decades.
Joe Cottington, Associate Publisher, acquired world rights in all languages direct from the BBC. Bowie at the BBC will carry BBC branding and will publish at £25 on 14th September 2023, ahead of the 50th anniversary of Bowie’s Pin Ups album the following month.
The book explores the spectacular story of David Bowie, told in his own words. Spanning four decades and dozens of insightful interviews, this collection of transcripts gathers the very best of Bowie’s many appearances on BBC television and radio, with the selection curated and each interview introduced by BBC journalist and Bowie expert, Tom Hagler.
From a pre-fame teenager – appearing as part of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men – to an emerging talent desperate to promote himself, a white-hot new star electrifying the youth of the nation, a veteran musician creating his most exciting music and a veritable elder statesman of pop; throughout a dazzling career, Bowie spoke to the BBC more often than any other broadcaster, and this illuminating collection of his most fascinating interviews sees him tell his own life story, as it unfolds.
Joe Cottington, Associate Publisher at Welbeck, said:
‘The BBC played an integral part of David Bowie’s early success – it was on Top of the Pops, of course, that the Starman truly lifted off – and he repaid this support with dozens of appearances on the beeb over the years. Reading David’s own take on his music as his career unfolds, as well as his frequent funny asides and razor-sharp insights on a wide range of topics, is a whole new way of understanding his story. Tom has pulled together a fascinating selection, Bowie fans are in for a real treat.
Tom Hagler, author and BBC journalist said:
‘Like everyone, I was familiar with David Bowie’s performance of ‘Starman’ on Top of the Pops but what I hadn’t appreciated was just how many interviews he did with the BBC. A trawl through the BBC vaults revealed old interviews that I hadn’t even known existed. It was a thrilling discovery and I hope that even the most knowledgeable Bowie fans will be, to paraphrase the BBC itself, informed, educated and thoroughly entertained.’
