Recorded mostly live at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound studios and dubbed ‘plastic soul’ by Bowie himself, this album exudes David’s R&B influences. Production is shared between Visconti, Harry Maslin and Bowie. It contains ‘Fame’, his glorious assault on funk (and his Mainman management group…!) – which was co-written by John Lennon, who also sang on it and Beatles cover Across The Universe – and, of course, the title track, the funky, toe-tapping love story of newlyweds. Fame was a big hit in the US, as was the subsequent album – providing his first significant crossover.
