Heathen marks the return of Tony Visconti as co-producer with Bowie (who had not collaborated with David since Scary Monsters in 1980). Despite work on it having started pre-9/11, production took in that date and, while no songs were written specifically about the terrorist atrocities that took place that day, Bowie admits that the anxiety surrounding the whole time had an influence on the album’s end result. Very much a rocky, arty album, many fans looked upon it favourably as ‘old-school’ Bowie. The critics also liked Heathen and it was a commercial success – doing well in the UK, the US and throughout the world.
