David Bowie | Ziggy Stardust | Live 1978

David Bowie’s 1978 tour commenced in the U.S. on this day, the 29th of March 1978. This video is a new edit of footage shot in the U.S. during the early days of the tour, synced to Ziggy Stardust from the 1978 live album Stage, which was likewise recorded in the Spring of 1978.

David Bowie’s Isolar II 1978 World Tour, also known as The Low / “Heroes” World Tour or The Stage Tour, opened on the 29th of March, 1978 at the San Diego Sports Arena. The tour continued through North America, Europe and Australia and New Zealand before reaching a conclusion at the NHK Hall in Tokyo, on the 12th of December, 1978. Eighty dates were played, with a total attendance of almost 1.2 million people.

The majority of the material featured in the opening set was from the recent Low and “Heroes” albums. After an intermission, Bowie and the band returned and played seven (of the original eleven) songs from the 1972 album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. It must have been a surprise to fans, because the previous post-Ziggy era tours had only featured two or three songs from the Ziggy album; usually Suffragette City and one or two others.

The 1978 Ziggy set started with album opener, Five Years and played further songs in the original Ziggy album order, finishing with its closer, Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide. Incidentally, Bowie had the band learn the entirety of the Ziggy Stardust album in rehearsals, with a view to possibly playing the complete album during the live shows.

Tour pianist, Sean Mayes writes about the Ziggy set on the first night at the San Diego Sports Arena, in his chronicle of the 1978 tour, “Life on Tour with Bowie: A Genius Remembered”:

“…we crashed out the first chord – THRUM… Pushing through the market square… delight from 15,000… Five Years… people were holding up five spread fingers, mouthing the words.
“Then the bombshells followed – Soul Love! Star! David dancing, bouncing, kicking – this is not Bowie posing, it’s David having a ball. Hang on to Yourself! The neons spill daylight across the jumping crowd. Ziggy played guitar… a roar for this anthem. Suffragette City… and there’s electric expectancy until Aaaah… Wham, Bam, Thank you, Ma’am! As the crowd leapt to it’s feet shouting.
“Tonight and on most of the American tour he played Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide and as the lights came up there he was with a cigarette in his mouth, a souvenir of concerts of the past”.

It’s been a while since I made a new Bowie Live ’78 video. Originally it had been my intention to create a video for every song from the tour. However, there just isn’t enough suitable footage to achieve that ambition. I do hope to have more DB live ’78 productions out this year, and in the meantime here’s Ziggy Stardust Live 1978!

Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!
