David Bowie accepted an honorary doctorate while 580 graduates received their diplomas at the 1999 Berklee Commencement on May 8th, 1999. On the day he became a doctor of music, Bowie also delivered the commencement address to a crowd of about 4,000 at the Hynes Convention Center. After praising students for Friday night’s musical tribute to the legend, Bowie described music as “my doorway of perception and the house that I live in.”.
